Fresh, chilled and frozen goods require specific controls and transport equipment. The pharmaceutical world is well aware of these regulations. However, companies not in the pharmaceutical sector are not always aware of everything they need to know about transporting conditioned goods by air. Due to this lack of knowledge, many companies use solutions that do not fully protect their products. This can lead to product wastage and costly delays for the customer at the receiving end of the shipment.
To highlight and address these issues, we conducted a test to check whether fresh and chilled products can be shipped safely with Thermal Cover protection. Our test setup involved packing six pallets (each weighing about 1 tonne) of fresh cheese in a thermal cover.
The pallets were checked with data loggers before being packed in the thermal cover then again after being loaded into an air-conditioned container. We measured the temperature, dew point, relative humidity and pressure drop in the thermal cover during transport from Sweden to Vietnam - eight days of transport by truck, ferry during summer conditions, followed by sea freight via Singapore to Vietnam, where it was loaded directly onto another truck to Ho Chi Minh City within 48 hours of arrival at the port.
The challenge of refrigerated food shipping
Chilled food comes in many shapes and sizes, but the basic requirements are the same: the product must be kept cold, it must be delivered on time and it must look as good as when you put it in your trolley. The challenge is that chilled products have a very short lifespan once they start warming up. This makes them more temperamental than other types of products transported by air or sea, so you need all hands on deck - from product design to packaging engineering - if you want to make sure your chilled goods arrive safely where they need to go!
Chilled products include fish and seafood; dairy products; cooked meat (such as poultry); prepared foods (such as cheese boards) or ready-to-eat meals. It also includes products like broccoli or avocados, which do not look attractive when stored at room temperature for a long time, as they brown quickly if not kept cool enough during transport.
The solution of refrigerated food shipments
The thermal sleeve is a refrigerated packaging for around the pallet of products. It is made of a special type of insulation, which can be used to maintain the temperature at a certain level and keep it cold during transport. The thermal sleeve is designed to protect perishable products from direct sunlight. Developed by CSN, this product is used by companies transporting fresh products such as fruit, vegetables or fish, as well as by other companies transporting perishable goods such as pharmaceuticals or medical supplies.
The test
The tests were carried out by a third party, commissioned by the manufacturer of the thermal insulation materials.
The result
- The product was delivered in the same condition as when it left the factory.
- The product was delivered on time, at the right temperature and humidity, at the right place and to the right person, without delay.
