The history of polystyrene

The history of polystyrene. Here is a brief history lesson on Styrofoam: Polystyrene was discovered by accident in 1839. A German pharmacist named Eduard Simon, while experimenting with 'styrax', discovered the basis of what we now know as Styrofoam. After further development of the product in the following years, it was eventually used very widely, among other things by making use of its good insulating properties. Think of packaging materials of course, but also napkins, insulation sheets, drinking cups and food packaging.

Is Styrofoam environmentally friendly and recyclable?

Nowadays, we live in a very environmentally conscious world. In that, it is of course important to use sustainable and environmentally friendly packaging. So it is a logical question whether a polystyrene box is biodegradable or reusable after its lifetime. The answer is yes! Styrofoam is 100% recyclable. Unfortunately, this is often not the case with coated cardboard or paper.

Styrofoam also consists of 98% air and is manufactured in some of the most modern, environmentally certified factories where only steam and high pressure are used during the moulding process.

Life-cycle analyses show that a polystyrene box has a significantly lower environmental impact than other materials used for the same purpose - especially the supposedly more environmentally friendly paper or cardboard.
