Performance of EPS (polystyrene foam) cooling boxes

EPS refrigerated boxes are widely used for chilled shipping of temperature-sensitive products. Thanks to their closed-cell structure and high insulation value, they are suitable for various applications within food, pharma and logistics.

  • Cooling duration: up to approx. 48 hours (depending on use, gel packs and outside temperature)
  • Insulation: constructed of ±98% air, ensuring high insulation value
  • Applications: suitable for meat, fish, meals and pharmaceutical products
  • Use in practice: widely used by e-commerce food companies and logistics parties

Why choose EPS cooling boxes?

High insulation value

An EPS box (tempex box) has excellent insulating properties thanks to its closed air cells. This keeps products at temperature for a long time during transport, whether cooled or frozen.

Perfect to combine with gel packs

Combined with gel packs, EPS boxes are ideal for refrigerated shipping. They are widely used within food, pharma and logistics and offer a reliable solution for temperature-sensitive shipments.

Sturdy and shockproof

The sturdy structure of an EPS box protects fragile products from bumps and external pressure. This makes the boxes suitable for transporting, for example, meat, fish and pharmaceutical products.

Lightweight and cost-saving

EPS boxes are surprisingly light, ensuring lower shipping costs without compromising on performance. Ideal for e-commerce and distribution where weight plays an important role.

Applications: what are EPS boxes (tempex boxes) used for?

EPS boxes, also known as Styrofoam or tempex boxes, are widely used for refrigerated shipping of temperature-sensitive products. Thanks to their high insulation value and solid structure, they are suitable for both daily shipments and large-scale logistics processes.

  • Fish and meat: Keeps products chilled for long periods during transport, maintaining freshness and quality.
  • Fruits, vegetables and dairy: Protects against temperature fluctuations and extends the shelf life of fresh produce.
  • Flowers and plants: Ensures a stable climate and prevents damage due to temperature differences.
  • Medicines and pharmaceuticals: Ideal for products where temperature control is essential within the entire cold chain.
  • Meal boxes and catering: Suitable for both chilled and hot transport of meals and food boxes.

When combined with gel packs, cooling performance is significantly extended.

Properties of EPS boxes

Our EPS boxes are widely used in various industries thanks to their versatile properties. Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), better known as Styrofoam or tempex, is a lightweight, foam-like material composed of 98% air and 2% polystyrene. EPS offers excellent insulation, shock absorption and is moisture and mould resistant.

The insulation value of EPS boxes is determined by the thickness of the walls. The larger the box, the thicker the wall, which improves both strength and insulation. To ensure that your product arrives at the desired temperature, we recommend first samples are requested and tested. We offer EPS boxes with walls from 20 mm (thin wall) to 30-50 mm (thick wall), both with and without leak holes.

How does an EPS box work?

EPS (expanded polystyrene), also known as Styrofoam or tempex, consists of millions of tiny air-filled cells. This air acts as an insulating barrier and slows down the transfer of heat from outside to inside. This keeps the temperature inside the box stable for longer during transport.

The insulation value of an EPS box is largely determined by the wall thickness. The thicker the wall, the better the insulation and the longer products remain cooled. In practice, EPS refrigerated boxes are often combined with gel packs, which actively lower and stabilise the temperature during transport.

Factors such as outside temperature, transport time and the amount of free space in the box affect performance. By filling the box as compactly as possible and placing gel packs strategically (preferably on top of the products), cooling efficiency is maximised.

Tip: For longer transport times or higher temperatures, thick-walled EPS boxes combined with additional gel packs are often chosen.

EPS box vs 4-layer and 6-layer insulation bag

Are you hesitating between an EPS (Styrofoam) box or an insulation bag? Below you can see the main differences between a thick-walled EPS box, a 4-layer insulation bag and a 6-layer insulation bag.

Conclusion: A 4-layer insulation bag offers similar performance to a thick-walled EPS box, but is more flexible and space-saving. For longer transport times or higher temperatures, a 6-layer insulation bag offers even better insulation performance. However, EPS boxes remain the best choice when maximum protection, strength and watertightness are required.

Frequently asked questions about EPS Styrofoam boxes

An EPS box - also called Styrofoam box or tempex box - is an insulating packaging made of expanded polystyrene. Due to its high air content, the material has excellent insulating properties and is widely used for refrigerated shipping.

EPS has a very high insulation value. The thicker the wall, the better the performance. Combined with gel packs, the temperature remains stable for long periods, which is essential for temperature-sensitive products.

In practice, an EPS box is often used for shipments of 24 to 48 hours. The exact duration depends on factors such as outside temperature, contents and amount of refrigerant.

  • Meat, fish and other fresh produce
  • Meal boxes and food delivery
  • Medicines and pharmaceuticals
  • Flowers and plants

Thanks to the combination of insulation and protection, EPS boxes are ideal for refrigerated shipping.

EPS absorbs virtually no moisture, but it is not completely waterproof under pressure. Therefore, EPS boxes are often combined with an inner bag or absorption material.

These are different names for the same material: expanded polystyrene. In practice, these terms are used interchangeably.

Yes, this is even the standard. Gel packs are usually placed on top of products to circulate cold air downwards.

Always choose a format that best suits your product. Too much empty space reduces the insulating effect and can negatively affect cooling performance.
