What is EPS and what are its capabilities?

EPS Boxes for perishable goods

It is important to transport perishable goods responsibly to preserve their quality. EPS (also called tempex or Styrofoam) is an insulating material regularly used to protect and insulate goods during transport.

EPS stands for expanded polystyrene. In this process, polystyrene granules expand under heating, after which they stick together. You can actually forget this technical piece right away, but what you shouldn't forget is that air bubbles are formed during the expansion, making EPS material 98% (!) of air (and no, that's not hot air).

As EPS material consists mostly of air, EPS insulation material is very light and therefore nice to use (prevents some back pain anyway). EPS material also has shock-absorbing properties, making it ideal for transporting fragile items. Products will therefore not be damaged during transport. That is nice to know when you want to transport valuable products. In addition, EPS material is good for the wallet. Because EPS material 98% consists of air, little material costs are incurred, making insulation with EPS/tempex relatively inexpensive. Finally, the moisture-resistant properties of EPS/tempex make the material popular for packing cooked food and perishables.

EPS boxes

Because EPX/tempex is shockproof, highly impact-resistant and impervious to UV radiation, mould and moisture, EPS material is therefore very suitable for transporting goods. EPS material can be pressed into any shape. There are also EPS boxes. These are insulated packaging boxes with which products can be shipped cooled or frozen while preserving the quality of the products. With EPS boxes, you actually kill two birds with one stone; the EPS boxes have a general protective function and ensure that products remain at the right temperature.

How well does EPS insulate?

The very light weight of EPS/tempex may raise the question of how well EPS actually insulates. Since still air does not conduct heat and EPS/tempex consists of 98% air, we can say that EPS insulates well. The thicker the walls of the box, the better the insulation. Because EPS does not or hardly age, the insulation value is permanent.

Is EPS airtight?

The quality of perishable goods is not only maintained by a good insulation value of the transport packaging. The goods also stay fresh longer when packed in airtight material. EPS/tempex material has good airtightness.

Therefore, using EPS boxes certainly ensures that the quality of the goods stays fresher for longer while being transported.

Advantages of EPS

  • Cheap
  • Insensitive to moisture
  • Light material
  • The packaging with the highest insulation value
  • Rot-free, mould-free
